Tim Ferris in 'The Four Hour Work Week' said of a VA...

"Get one, whether you need one or not..."

I must confess, his reasons for that remark were pretty good, yet I wasn't at the stage then of being able to pay for one.

Fast forward 2 years and the situation for me is quite different. It's not the money side that drives it... but a focus to free myself from the monotony of brain crippling tasks like loading csv files onto Hootsuite ever 7-9 days!

More importantly however, is freeing me up to do the strategy & planning that will really grow the business.

So now, with my VA taking on more tasks than ever before, I thought would drop you a note on the benefits and otherwise of being the boss.

 

  • Benefits of having a VA
  1. Ok, let's start with what everybody says... delegate the jobs you hate to do.
  2. Pass over the tasks that others are better qualified to do.
  3. They may have strengths that may complement yours (thus fill in the gaps).
  4. Procrastination should become a thing of the past.
  5. You have more free time...yipee!
  6. And, finally, the real reason why you should do it...grow your business and make more profit!
  • Drawbacks of having a VA
  1. An expense for the business, which you may not be able to afford.
  2. Tasks take time to be explained initially.
  3. For me, accuracy has been a problem.
  4. Depending on what you pass over, you may have different styles, like writing an eBook for example.

These are just a few, and everyone will have their own thoughts!

For me, Joefizz Web Marketing had become a beast to feed and all I did was lubricate the machine. I knew that was wrong because I did the same thing... every week!...

... and I wasn't growing my list as I should have have been!

I took the decision therefore to recruit.

If we agree on the positives above and just respond on the negatives for a second:

  1. If you think you can’t afford it, think again! Think of the few tasks that you could outsource for as little $2/hour. In addition, think of freeing up your time to work on the right things. It's the right things that earn you money!
  2. My view has always been work hard in beginning (even longer hours) to get what you want. Why? Well, because gradually, the dependancy upon you will be less and less and soon they will be doing your tasks without interuptions or queries...Voila! There are great tools you can use here to mitigate that problem like Skype and Jing (both free)...
  3. If you are a control freak like me, then this will be vital! It is however about balance...them getting it right most of the time and me releasing my grip on what's acceptable...
  4. Finally, I guess this ties into point 3. Providing the spelling and grammar are correct...heck, just go with it!

 

What to outsource? For me, my VA does...

  • Review Facebook friend requests & Twitter followers.
  • Posting in Facebook groups.
  • Upload social media posts via Hootsuite
  • Article submission.
  • Link exchanges.
  • eBook proof reading and writing!
  • Article submission
  • Admin for these too!
In addition, I have outsourced to others:
  • WordPress banners
  • Videos
  • Logos

 

Where to outsource:

The most popular outsourcing sites include:

  1. Elance.com
  2. Scriptlance.com
  3. Guru.com
  4. oDesk.com
  5. fiverr.com

 

I use elance mostly but also Odesk too (got my app built through there). Fiverr.com just makes me smile...everything for $5!

You essentially post your job and contractors bid for the work. Choose the best one suited for your job but remember to do your due diligence on them possessing the right skills, having the right experience and positive feedback on jobs completed.

A tip for you, ... often in some parts of the world e.g. the Far East (skill levels are outstanding) their hourly fees will be substantially less than yours... By providing work to them, they and their family (and community) will benefit too!

So, it's a win, win situation for everybody!

This time of year is absolutely essential for putting down strong foundations for the rest of the year.

Why?

By having a framework to follow, provides direction like a ship’s rudder. Targeted actions achieves success much more quickly. My mentor Brian Tracy says that one hour of planning saves 4 hours of action… and he’s right!

Also, you have got a full 12 months calendar ahead of you in order to make a difference before another New Year begins…and the clock clicks back to zero again….gulp!

In addition to a plan, here’s a quick heads up on things you MUST be doing too...

 

  • Set wealth goals that are Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic and Time bound (SMART). Write them down…
  • Determine what Massive BOLD actions that you are going to take to make these goals happen.
  • Build in reflection time so that you can measure your success, changing actions if necessary.
  • Set yourself a REWARD at each measure point with an overall reward for ultimate achievement (Law of Attraction will help here…)
  • Identify what Personal Development you wish to take on board this Year and look for people in that area. Invest some time in you!
  • I would certainly consider the 100 Day Challenge! Pure genius!!!
  • Set Life goals too.

 

For me, I use a Gantt chart that amalgamates all of the above together. In summary, I am committing to these actions in the coming 3 months:

As you can see, quite a few activities (so not much down time)… and really about growing my brand by marketing and spending more time in areas that are income earning. Joefizz.com is quite a beast to feed and the VA I use is now AUTOMATICALLY attending to the work behind me (quality is bit of an issue though moment, but we are getting there).

My goals are all around financial freedom. So, this year’s goal is to pay down debts…both bad and good, so that in June 2013, I will be completely debt free! Voila!!

So, let’s wrap this up. What do you want to achieve in 2012?

Whether it’s breaking into IM, making a hundred bucks a month, six figures or even world domination, being focused on your business could be the difference between success and failure… I know which route I'd choose…

Finally, I love this quotation by Muhammad Ali…

“Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them, a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill”.

Remember… mediocrity is a choice!

I can't believe that 2011 is almost at an end?

The Festive period is an important occassion for me. Time with kids... doing child like things...is just heaven.

It's also a time to review 2011 to see what went well, what didn't go quite so right, what activities/actions can you drop & what opportunities you can take forward into 2012.

Reinforcing the right behaviours, attitude and habits to make sure that your are in the best shape to achieve success!

Finally, that all important 2012 plan...what goals are you going to set yourself next year? Go on, dream big!

Whatever your doing...just have fun, love and be loved and just make a difference to one person!
