Task v Process

You'll have heard of the old addage "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for life."

Fishing is a task.

It's the way you fish that makes it a process. For example, you could sit on a side of a river bank with a rod, or you could try a small net from beside a cliff by the sea, or you could use a boat and drop traps in to catch crabs. There are many other ways to do it too... but, they all would be processes. Why is that? Well...

A task is what you do.

A process if the way you do it,

Tasks are often specific and can be repeated several times a day.

OK, where is this going? Well bear with me, because Henry Fayol said that all individual tasks fall under 8 management processes, which were noted as:

  • Planning
  • Organising
  • Controlling
  • Directing
  • Problem solving
  • Decision making
  • Communicating
  • Motivating

He said that these 8 management processes related to all industries and so to an individual's work.

That means, to improve your chances of success, you must improve those key areas...

So begin today by:

Creating a Mission

State in writing where you want to be.

Take the time to review your current position to see where you actually are NOW?

Action Plan.

Creating a detailed action plan on how you are going to bridge that gap.

In any event, you should take this opportunity to work more efficiently in those subject areas because, for example, the way that you make decisions can have a profound effect on your results.... full stop!
