The Advantages (and Disadvantages) of Starting an On-line Business

Hi all,

For those not in IM, have you ever looked into internet marketing and wondering whether this is the route for you and whether you should do it or not?

Here’s a summary, in my view of the advantages and disadvantages of being an IM’er:

Starting an Online Business Requires Hours of Work

If you’ve ever been seduced by the ‘get-rich-quick’ schemes, then you are not alone. Most people (me included) found the sales headlines of ‘…make millions while working just 2 hours a week from a laptop on a beach’ irresistible. However, the true facts are, to be truly successful at internet marketing you need to invest a large amount of your time just like any other business. If like me, you love spending time on the internet, then this arena comes highly recommended. However, if you generally don’t like computers or don’t have the time available, then this can be a real difficulty in building an on-line reputation.

Starting an On-line Business Requires a Certain Degree of Specialist Knowledge (or the Ability to Pay Someone for this)

If you are planning on going it alone then there is much to learn. However, there are many cheap IM courses & coaches that diligently take you through the steps of Internet Marketing and make the process pretty easy… (not like the old days!) Try these for starters:

If you don’t have the knowledge, then I would recommend this route. Nothing is impossible…you can do everything yourself (mostly) but on your own… takes 100 times longer!

There are 2 things to watch out for:

1. Information overwhelm (i.e. can’t see wood for the trees), so end up taking no action at all!

2. Shiny object syndrome (you buy everything that’s offered to you because you think it’s great!)

Internet Marketing Puts the World at Your Fingertips

I’ve discussed the difficulties you’ll face as a new internet marketer (‘newbie’), so what are the advantages? The first advantage of going on-line is that the whole world is at your fingertips – you can suddenly market your product to any part of the world and not just your region. The internet has made it easier than ever to expand your business internationally and that means more opportunities, which translates into much more money in the bank.

The second advantage is also a disadvantage, in that you have flexibility to work when you want. What that means is that the East Coast of America is 5 hours behind us in the UK and the West Coast is 8. If you wanted to spend your actions in that time zone exchanging Facebook posts, then you can! That would give you flexibility to take kids to school and do the shopping etc.

However, you have to disciplined because most people work from home and the temptation is to watch the TV…it’s a slippery slope!

Internet Marketing Can Teach You Skills for Off-line Markets

After putting in the initial investment of time and developing your brand, internet marketing actually becomes a useful tool for offline marketing. There are many ways to teach local businesses to market themselves properly, for which you can charge a consultation fee. That means you become an expert and charge accordingly (if that’s what you want to do?).

If not, by developing yourself, you’ll have honed your skills to market your own company professionally into the future.

I hope this blog post has helped you?
